The Discovery

Summer of 2019. 6:13 PM my wife and I step off the TGV at Gare de Montparnasse. We had just spent a week touring the vineyards of Bordeaux. It was a warm summer evening and I was dying to have a few bottles of good white burgundy. We went straight from the station to the restaurant where I had already booked a table for 4.

I knew I was sure of finding a good bottle of Coche Dury which is by far the reference and the most highly sought after white burgundy in the world. The wines of Jean Francois are highly coveted and fetch astronomic prices with collectors paying more for a village Bourgogne of Coche Dury then the price of a Premier Cru from an established Domaine. I knew the sommelier and he decided to test me by serving a bottle blind. It tasted like a Coche Dury. That’s how I came to discover the wines of Domaine du Cerberon which share the same flinty nose as a Coche. You can read about them below.

In 2008, the famous Hachette guide described Domaine du Cerberon located in the heart of Meursault as a ‘pocket estate’ with its small amount of vineyards of just about 2.84 Ha. Its caves were established in the 13th century by the Citeaux monks. and it’s in the same family ownership for the past 150 years.

Meursault

Meursault is the largest village of the Cote de Beaune with a vinous history dating back to Roman times. Its famous for its white wine of which there are 17 different Premier Crus. Its aromatic power and exceptional balance between fat and acidity make it an aristocrat among burgundies. The young wine is redolent of toasted almonds and hazelnuts in a floral (mayflower, elder, bracken, lime, verbena) and mineral (flint) setting. Butter, honey, and citrus fruits are also present.  Comte Dominique Lafon whose family has resided in Meursault for generations describes its various climats in the video link below courtesy BIVB.
